Susanna Bathing
oil on panel (47 × 39 cm) — 1636 Mauritshuis, The Hague
Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn biography
This work is linked to Susanna 1:15
15 And it fell out, as they watched a fit time, she went in as before with two maids only, and she was desirous to wash herself in the garden: for it was hot.
When Susanna is about to take a bath, she notices that she is being looked on. one of the voyeurs can be seen to the right of her, with some difficulty. With her hands she tries to cover her nakedness. She looks at us: after all, we're peeking at her just as the dirty old men are.
In 1647 Rembrandt made another Susanna, where the two old men step forward.

Susanna and the Elders

Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn biography
This work is linked to Susanna 1:20
20 Behold, the garden doors are shut, that no man can see us, and we are in love with thee; therefore consent unto us, and lie with us.
Mahogany panel. one of the many paintings of the story of Susanna, who is spied upon by two old men when taking a bath. When the modest Susanna rejects their advances, they cause serious problems for her. Daniel comes to the rescue in the end.
Rembrandt had depicted Susanna before, in 1636. on that panel the two men are still hidden.
Research has shown that much of the background in the painting was painted over by the English painter Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792), who at the time owned the panel.

This version of the Supper at Emmaus is more introverted than the panel Rembrandt painted that same year. The dim light and the curtain create an intimate atmosphere.
It used to be considered an original Rembrandt, but these days it is attributed to an unknown pupil.

This is the most famous of Rembrandt's works on Emmaus. Rembrandt had painted the supper in Emmaus before, in 1626.

It shows the exact moment when the two men realize that the person who has been accompanying them on their journey to Emmaus is their deceased master, not just some passer-by. one of the disciples falls on his knees, another recoils. This early work shows Rembrandt's skill in handling light and darkness.

Please scroll down to read more information about this work. This is one of Rembrandt's earliest known panels, made in the year that he turned 21. It shows the apostle St. Paul in prison, lost in thought. Obviously the harsh conditions in jail did not stop him from trying to achieve his mission. The pen in his left hand suggests that he was writing one of his many letters. Paul is depicted in traditional manner: long beard, bald head, and with his distinctive attribute: the sword, quite remarkable given the context. The sword has several meanings:

Somewhat tired, an old man sits at his desk. The sword against the wall tells us this must be St. Paul. The former persecutor of Christians is often depicted with that attribute. The painting is signed in the lower left corner with "Rembrandt 163". Experts think it must be made around 1633. St Matthew is often depicted with an angel-like boy. Contrary to the other evangelists his attribute is not an animal but a human being. That is because his gospel begins with a list of fathers and sons, Jesus' family tree.
Rembrandt has the boy whisper something in Matthew's ear. Perhaps the apostle was short of inspiration while writing his gospel. The boy resembles Rembrandt's son Titus.
This is one of five portraits of apostles Rembrandt made in 1661.

This is one of the five portraits Rembrandt made of apostles in 1661. Like the other ones it shows the lined face of contemplative man, dressed in 17th century style clothes. This canvas is exceptional in the series as the apostle is shown in profile. In the other works they are shown frontally or in three quarter profile.
St James can be identified by his usual iconographic attribute: the walking stick leaning against the wall. Note his weathered hands. They emphasize the prayer where his thoughts dwell.
The painting was sold at auction in 2007 for $25.8 million to an unknown bidder.

In 1661 Rembrandt portrayed five apostles. This is St Bartholomew, who can be recognized by the knife in his hand. Rubens also showed the knife in his portrait of Bartholomew.
Rembrandt may have used a neighbour to pose as the model. The man appears pensive, almost lost in thoughts. He is dressed in a 17th century outfit.
Rembrandt applied the impasto technique on this canvas: thick layers of paint, carved with a palette knife. That made the apostle's forehead literally deeply lined.
In 1657 Rembrandt also made a portrait of St. Bartholomew.

Simeon is sincerely happy that he, as an old man who is about to die, may hold the future Messiah in his arms. The child's parents had taken their son to temple to have him blessed and to bring sacrifices. The Holy Spirit had led Simeon to the temple.
The subject must have fascinated Rembrandt, because he made at least two paintings and several drawings about it. This painting focuses entirely on Simeon's emotion and leaves out almost all other figures. There also is no reference to the place of action. The contrast with his great 1631 painting could hardly be stronger.
This may very well have been Rembrandt's last painting. It was found unfinished in his workshop the day after he died. The woman in the background was probably added afterwards by someone else. Some think she is Maria, others say she must be the prophetess Anna.

Mary and Joseph had taken Jesus to the temple to present him to God. The devout Simeon, helped by the Holy Spirit, saw that the infant might very well be the awaited Messias. He took the child in his arms and praised God. The old man said he now was ready to die, "For mine eyes have seen thy salvation".
In Luke's gospel Simeon also speaks of "a light to lighten the Gentiles". Rembrandt used that by depicting the child as the source of light.
The surprised Mary kneels next to Simeon. Joseph is next to her. He holds two pigeons: the sacrifice required for this occasion. The group is situated before the steps that lead to the high priest's throne.
Rembrandt, 25 years old, was still living in Leiden when he made this painting.

Saul and David (1655-1660)
oil on canvas (130 × 164 cm) — 1655 - 1660 Mauritshuis, The Hague
Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn biography
This work is linked to 1 Samuel 18:10
David has beaten the Philistines and is returning to the court of King Saul. The superstitious king considers David a threat to his already weakened position. We see him trying to think of a way to get rid of the young hero. At the same, he is moved by David's harp playing - Saul dries his eyes with a curtain.
The people would probably rise against him if he were to kill David. The spear in his hand is useless, although in a flash of anger he does try to kill David with it. So he promotes David to "captain over a thousand", hoping he will die in battle.
In Rembrandt's painting, the old suffering king is clearly touched by David's playing. David is completely absorbed in his music.
It is a much more melancholic and touching interpretation than his earlier rendition of the same episode, which Rembrandt created in 1630.
The attribution to Rembrandt was a point of discussion until it was confirmed by an international team of experts in 2015.
