Jheronimus Bosch ca. 1450 – 1516

Flood panels, outsides

oil on panel (69 × 36 cm and 69 × 39 cm) — c. 1514

Museum Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam

Jheronimus Bosch biography

These are the reverse sides of the left and right wings of a triptych. The insides show the world before and after the Flood. The central panel is lost.

Each panel contains two tondos (roundels, or medaillons) with allegorical pictures. Bosch' message seems to be that true faith can save a man from the devil.

In the upper left tondo, someone is being beaten by a devil in a gate. A woman flees from the violence; a man kneels and prays.

In the lower left tondo, the devil has taken the plough from the farmer, who lies on the ground.

In the upper right a man is being attacked by three demons. In the lower right tondo, Jesus is blessing the same man. In the background scene an angel is seen handing the man some clothes.

Hell and the Flood

Jheronimus Bosch biography

This work is linked to Genesis 8:4

(창 8:4) 일곱째 달 곧 그 달 열이렛날에 방주가 아라랏 산에 머물렀으며

These are the inner sides of the wing panels of the Flood triptych (please also see the reverse sides).

On the right, Noah's ark has stranded on Mount Ararat. Noah and his family open the hatch, allowing the animals to leave the ship in pairs. In the foreground we see the drowned.

The left wing is considered to be a depiction of Hell. All figures are demons. In the background there is a burning city.

The central part of the triptych has been lost.

Jan Brueghel the Elder 1568 – 1625

The Animals Board Noah's Ark

oil on panel (55 × 84 cm) — 1613

Museum J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles

Jan Brueghel the Elder biography

This work is linked to Genesis 7:7

(창 7:7) 노아는 아들들과 아내와 며느리들과 함께 홍수를 피하여 방주에 들어갔고 히6:18

In the center a group watches Noah (with stick) while he leads a colourful bunch of animals to his ark. The ark is in the distance, to the left of the group.

On the left is a calm stream. Nothing hints at the imminent flood.

Jan Bruegel here took advantage of his study of animals. He used to be court painter to Archduke Albrecht and the Infanta Isabella, who kept a large collection of animals from across the world in Brussels.

Bertram of Minden ca. 1340 – 1414/15

The building of the ark

mixed techniques on panel (84 × 56 cm) — 1383

Museum Kunsthalle, Hamburg

Bertram of Minden biography

This work is linked to Genesis 6:14

(창 6:14) 너는 고페르 나무로 너를 위하여 방주를 만들되 그 안에 칸들을 막고 역청을 그 안팎에 칠하라

A panel from the left outer wing of Bertram's Grabow altarpiece. The ugly stain is the remainder of a 16th century painting.

Fortunately we can still see how Noah receives the command to build himself an ark of gopher wood large enough to house his family and a male and female of every species. In the ark they would be able to survive the great flood.

Nobody really knows what tree a gopher is. The word is a transliteration of the word used in the Hebrew sources and occurs only in this chapter of the Bible. It is often thought to be either a cedar or a cypress.

Michelangelo Buonarroti 1475 – 1564

The Flood

fresco (280 × 560 cm) — 1508-1512

Michelangelo Buonarroti biography

This work is linked to Genesis 7:17

(창 7:17) 홍수가 땅에 사십 일 동안 계속된지라 물이 많아져 방주가 땅에서 떠올랐고

Desperate people seek refuge on a mountain top. They hope to be safe from the rising water. Another group seeks shelter from the rain. A small boat is about to capsize.

In the background is Noah's ark, the only ship that would survive the flood.
