Three women approach the tomb from the background. one of them, Mary Magdalene, is dressed in white. They intend to anoint Christ's body. But the door is already open, and Christ floats above the world. Two soldiers look up in amazement; a third soldier is still sleeping.

The fourth man, barely dressed, is also a soldier. His nakedness is thought to be a reference to the pagan world which has now come to an end. Christ has risen, the Christian era has begun.

Bellini originally painted the scene on a panel. It was later transferred to canvas.

Jesus is risen from his grave. The guards look on, taken by surprise. one of them, with the helmet on his head, is still asleep.

The white banner symbolizes the triumph over death. The purple cloak represents martyrdom and sacrifice.

Jesus' halo has a remarkable shape: it is a rhomboid, or parallelogram. Some say it is a Byzantine tradition that El Greco probably learned when he still painted icons on Crete.

The painting is part of an altarpiece for the church of the monastery Lady Mary of Aragon in Madrid. The altarpiece also included an Annunciation, Baptism, Crucifixion and Pentecost.

This is the right panel of the socle of the altarpiece that Mantegna made for the San Zeno in Verona. Today Verona only has a replica; this original panel is in the French city of Tours.

The painting shows a radiant Christ stepping out of his grave, surrounded by angels. In his left hand he holds the flag of the crusaders. The tomb is situated in a cave. The soldiers who kept guard seem to woken by the turmoil.

Most gospels in the Bible do not tell this story but speak of the discovery of an empty grave.
