‘Don't touch me', says Jesus to Mary Magdalene, recoiling. Mary has come to the grave that morning to embalm the body of Christ. To her amazement Jesus is walking around alive. She first mistakes him for the gardener, which is why Titian has him holding a spade.

Irony has it that the crux of the story is presumably based on an translation error. The Greek source text reads: 'Mê mou aptou', which mean either ‘let me go', or ‘do not hold me.' Jesus must have said to Mary that she shouldn't stop him on his way to his father. The Latin Vulgate translation chose for the Noli me tangere interpretation, which the KJV Bible translators in turn copied as ‘Touch me not.'

Jesus recoils when Mary Magdalene wants to touch him: Noli me tangere – touch me not. In the Gospel of Matthew Mary grasps Jesus by the feet. It is assumed that the text was not translated properly from the Greek (ref. Titian's version).

In the background John and Peter (r.) hurry back after having found the grave empty.

Holbein may have painted this panel while in France, trying to get a position at the court of Francis I.

"Don't touch me, because I am not yet ascended to my Father", Christ says to Mary Magdalene. The second part of that sentence is displayed on the hem of Christ's robe, in Latin: "nondum enim ascendi ad patrem".

Mary wears a beautiful gown, designed in the fashion of Van Oostsanen's times. Next to her is her usual symbol, a jar with ointment. Christ leans on a spade: according to the story he appeared to Mary as a gardener.

In the background several other scenes from Christ's rising are shown. To the left women find his empty grave. Other scenes show him meeting the three Marys and the men walking to Emmaus.
