The Apostles Receive their Mission

illuminated manuscript — 1452-60

 Museum Musée Condé, Chantilly

Jean Fouquet biography

This work is linked to Acts 2:17

The scene illustrates the moment the apostles receive their mission. The fireball is the Holy Spirit, whose rays touch the apostles and the water of the fountain. The apostles immediately start baptizing their students.

This is one of the illuminations Fouquet made for the famous book of hours of the French treasurer Étienne Chevalier.
