Albrecht Dürer 1471 – 1528
Job on the Dunghill, with his Wife
mixed techniques on panel (96 × 51 cm) — c. 1505
Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main
This work is linked to Job 2:9
Job is sitting on a dunghill. His wife pours a bucket of water on him. Perhaps she wanted to cool his body, that is covered with sore boils. The woman is dressed in cloths typical for Nuremberg, where Dürer lived. In the background Job's burning house is visible.
This panel is the outside of one the wings of the Jabach altarpiece. The remainders of the altarpiece are spread over several museums. The adjoining panel shows Job's friends.
